Baby, I Love You

As recorded by The Ronettes, Andy Kim, and others...

Andy Kim - Baby I Love You ad from 1969

The hallmark of a Jeff Barry song is the simplicity of lyrics.  As Jeff himself has pointed out, his lyrics are not complex or metaphoric - "They're not even metathree-ic," as Jeff said in the Chapel of Love video - nor are the songs meant to be lavish and epic sagas with all kinds of symbolism and hidden meanings.  Each of Jeff's songs conveys a message, in plain language.  You don't need a road map to understand a Jeff Barry tune.

"Baby, I Love You" is as simple a statement as one can imagine, yet that's what makes the song glorious.  It's direct and to the point, leaving no room for misinterpretation, and the sentiment is sweet.  "I love everything about you - I can't help it if I feel this way."  That's one of the most romantic lines ever written - what human being wouldn't want to hear those words from the person he or she cares about?

Whenever I hear this song, I can't help but think of Jeff and the way his music has changed our lives over the years - his artistry and genius as a songwriter and producer, and his worth as a human being.  And I can't help but think that those very words sum up exactly how I and his legions of fans all over the world feel about Jeff Barry - although it's in a different context, we all feel as though we've just been spiritually hugged and kissed by Jeff every time we hear the song, and we just got to say: "Baby, we love you!"

Baby I Love You
(Jeff Barry - Ellie Greenwich - Phil Spector)

Have I ever told you
How good it feels to hold you?
It isn't easy to explain
And though I'm really trying,
I think I may start crying,
My heart can't wait another day
When you kiss me I've just got to say

Baby I love you
Baby I love you
Baby I love only you

I can't live without you,
I love everything about you
I can't help it if I feel this way
Oh I'm so glad I found you
I want my arms around you
I love to hear you call my name
Tell me baby that you feel the same

Baby I love you
Baby I love you
Baby I love only you

Oh, from the day I saw you
I have been waiting for you
My heart can't wait another day
Come on, baby, let me hear you say

Baby I love you
Baby I love you
Baby I love only you
