Chapel of Love

Jeff Barry holds the distinction of writing the most famous wedding song other than "The Wedding March" itself.  His sweet, simple lyrics fully convey the kinds of optimistic dreams that betrothed young couples everywhere hold in their hearts.  Phil Spector struck out twice in the studio with "Chapel Of Love" (although his version with The Ronettes did have its moments).  Then Jeff took his turn at bat with The Dixie Cups, and his production remains the definitive version of the tune.  The easy-rockin' rhythm goes down as smooth as lemonade on a hot summer night.  Even so, "Chapel Of Love" wasn't hurt by Bette Midler's more energetic treatment, recorded ten years later.  Okay, so maybe Bette does sound more like she's ready to jump her boyfriend's bones than take his hand in marriage, but that's beside the point.   Nobody can sell a song like The Divine Miss M, and she's made this Jeff Barry blockbuster one of her signature tunes.  In 1970, Jeff recycled the sentiments of "Chapel Of Love" almost as effectively in an Archies song called "Together We Two."

Goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married
Goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married
Gee, I really love you and we're gonna get married
Goin' to the chapel of love

Spring is here, the sky is blue
Birds all sing as if they knew
Today's the day we'll say "I do"
And we'll never be lonely anymore

Because we're goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married
We're goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married
Gee, I really love him and we're gonna get married
We're goin' to the chapel of love

Bells will ring, the sun will shine
I'll be his and he'll be mine
We'll love until the end of time
And we'll never be lonely anymore

Because we're goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married
Goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married
Gee, I really love you and we're gonna get married
Goin' to the chapel of love
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Goin' to the chapel of love
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Goin' to the chapel of love
